The Job!

We’re looking for an experienced Database Expert to conduct a full assessment of our current PostgreSQL environment and guide us through the design and optimization of our future database architecture. This is a hands-on, short-term engagement for someone who can quickly understand complex systems, identify performance and reliability issues, and provide clear, actionable recommendations for improvement.

• Perform a comprehensive health check and assessment of the current PostgreSQL database environment
• Review performance, scalability, security, and operational practices
• Identify bottlenecks, configuration issues, and opportunities for improvement
• Develop recommendations and a high-level design for a future-state database architecture aligned with business and technical goals
• Advise on best practices for data management, backup and recovery, monitoring, and automation
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders and technical teams to ensure recommendations are practical and well-understood
• Optionally assist in early implementation or knowledge transfer to internal staff

What you bring to the job

You are someone with several years of hands-on experience in database administration, design, and optimization, with a strong focus on PostgreSQL. You are comfortable working independently in a consulting-style capacity and come with the following:

• Solid understanding of database performance tuning, indexing strategies, query optimization, and storage management
• Experience with high availability, replication, and backup/recovery strategies in Postgres
• Familiarity with cloud-hosted database environments (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or similar) is a plus
• Strong analytical and communication skills — able to translate technical findings into clear business recommendations
• Familiarity with data security standards and compliance requirements
• Broader knowledge of database technologies (MySQL, Oracle, etc.) for comparative insight
