Job Description

Senior Scientist - Computational Biology Genomics Laboratory (CBGL) at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital summary:

The Senior Scientist at the Computational Biology Genomics Laboratory (CBGL) leads and coordinates multi-disciplinary research projects focused on genomics and cancer biology, particularly pediatric cancer. The role involves developing and applying advanced molecular biology techniques, single-cell sequencing methods, and bioinformatics tools to support faculty research and collaborative studies on tumor evolution and survivor health. Additionally, the scientist supervises lab operations, trains staff, and contributes to scientific publications while ensuring high-quality data generation and protocol development.

The Computational Biology Genomics Laboratory (CBGL) has an open position for a Senior Scientist. This position will provide the selected candidate with the opportunity to contribute to projects of scientific and institutional importance. The CBGL is a central laboratory supporting principal investigators in the Department of Computational Biology, their collaborators, and multi-institutional partnerships initiated by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Current collaborations include the Transcription Collaborative, St. Jude Life, and the Childhood Cancer Survivorship Study.

The CBGL supports several areas of faculty research and interest. Including studies on genomic variation in cancer, the development of improved tools for the analysis and detection of pediatric cancer, cell programs in the tumor micro-environment, and the characterization of the properties of single cells during development and in tumor evolution.

A portion of the laboratory is currently supporting the St. Jude Life study with the Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control. Investigations are being conducted at the bulk and single cell level to better understand the molecular underpinnings impacting the quality of life of survivors, such as frailty, and the risk of secondary cancers from cancer treatment during childhood.

The selected candidate will utilize their demonstrated experience and problem-solving skills across a broad range of experimental techniques including but not limited to assays in molecular biology, genomics, advanced imaging methods, and tissue processing to generate and analyze high quality data in collaboration with faculty and scientists in the department of computational biology.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate team-based, multi-disciplinary projects independently under overall direction of the PI.
  • Build deep understanding of the field and be familiar with current literature in the field and related disciplines.
  • Develop new research protocols, techniques, and procedures.
  • Identify, process, organize, interpret, review, and report relevant experimental data.
  • Monitor data collection and entry methods to meet quality standards.
  • Present research to colleagues within and outside the institution; publish as co-author and/or independently draft sections of research manuscripts.
  • Guide/make recommendations for optimal lab operations, administration, and training.
  • Regularly trains and oversees the work of others in laboratory techniques and procedures.

Special Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Ideal candidates should have hands-on experience with various single cell RNA sequencing methods (droplet-based methods and combinatorial Indexing) and single cell whole genome amplification methods (MDA, PTA).
  • Preferably experienced in generating data using spatial transcriptomics platforms such as the Visium and Xenium.
  • Ability to train colleagues in new methods.
  • Exposure to Immunohistochemistry and Immunofluorescence microscopy.
  • Familiarity with cell sorting and cell staining methods.
  • Basic understating of command line tools and experience running commercial pipelines such as Cell Ranger and Space Ranger using both cloud applications and computational clusters.
  • The ability to identify and implement new methods or protocols related to single cell genomics from literature or commercial vendors.
  • Understanding and experience with next-generation sequencing platforms and workflows.
  • Perform lab related duties as assigned to meet the goals of the department.
