PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The EHS Manager is responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive risk management program that strives to go beyond regulatory compliance. This role will ensure that IEM follows all applicable federal, state and local regulations, including but not limited to occupational safety and health, waste management, environmental regulatory compliance, workers compensation, chemical control and industrial hygiene. The EHS Manager also contributes to efforts that build a strong safety culture and ensure proactive measures to continuously improve IEM’s EHS program. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who can work independently and is comfortable multitasking in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This position requires a high level of interaction with all functions throughout the organization, including both verbal and written communication.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as primary technical resource for employee questions and concerns involving Environmental Health and Safety issues including process changes · Acts as an Employer Representative and oversee the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), including meeting facilitation, training, documentation and compliance tracking.
  • Responsible for WorkSafeBC claim reporting and required follow up actions
  • Fulfill responsibilities as Fire Safety Director as required by British Columbia Fire Code; primary point of contact with EMS, maintain and improve emergency preparedness and response programs (fire safety, evacuation, spill response, etc.)
  • Develop, plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with provincial and applicable federal regulations including those governed by Workers Compensation Act, WorkSafeBC (OHS Regulations) and Government of Canada (Part II of the Canada Labour Code). and the corporate EHS strategy
  • Primary point of contact for WorkSafeBC officials or other related government or provincial officials
  • Maintain EHS documentation including injuries, policies, forms, chemical inventory, training records, inspection records and facility safety reviews · Develop and deliver effective Environment Health and Safety training programs for covered facilities and employees
  • Manage environmental permits, hazardous waste disposal, spill reporting, and air/water discharge monitoring as applicable
  • Maintain safety data sheet (SDS) management system · Perform safety inspections and surveys; prepare reports of findings and make recommendations on preventative measures where necessary
  • Set tone for a positive, learning Safety culture through a robust injury and illness prevention program, observations, concern reporting and leading safety indicators
  • Conduct post-incident investigations, prepare reports identifying possible incident causes and hazards; present recommendations for solutions to these hazards in the future
  • Track greenhouse gas emissions, identify waste reduction and energy efficiency opportunities. · Advise leadership team on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions
  • Perform other duties as assigned

COMPETENCIES:

  • Able to interpret regulations and implement requirements in the work environment
  • Proven knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and other federal (Canada Labour Code) / provincial safety legislation (e.g., BC Fire Code, BC Building Code, BC Electrical Code) Ability to analyze information, develop and deliver training programs, adapts policies, create reporting and proven progressive experience to offer recommendations for continuous improvement
  • Proven skill set with a variety of computer and software programs including: PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook and others
  • Capability to present information effectively to diverse audiences and stakeholders while responding to questions from groups of managers, employees and the leadership team
  • Proven leadership, teamwork and flexibility to manage changes in projects and priorities
  • Ability to write reports and procedural manuals
  • Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task effectively
  • Excellent follow-through

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, industrial engineering or related field of study preferred
  • Minimum of five (5-10) years of relevant experience in EHS compliance within a manufacturing environment or other industrial setting
  • Experience leading a team of direct reports
  • Professional EHS certifications including Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification, Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or other related safety certifications are preferred
