A fully funded PhD position is available at the Ontario Veterinary College, Department of Population Medicine, University of Guelph. The successful candidate will join a research project titled “Evaluating Free-Farrowing Systems – Impacts on Sow and Piglet Welfare, Mortality, and Productivity,” under the supervision of Dr. Terri O’Sullivan and Dr. Anne Deckert. The project will focus on on-farm trials, video-based behavioral assessments, and performance data analysis to improve swine welfare in low-confinement systems. Eligibility Requirements
Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in epidemiology, animal science, veterinary medicine, or related fields
Strong communication and organizational skills
Interest in animal welfare and swine production systems
Willingness to conduct on-farm research and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
Experience with behavioral observation, statistical analysis, or swine management is an asset, but not required
Responsibilities
Data collection at the Ontario Swine Research Centre
Behavioral scoring and welfare assessments
Performance and mortality data analysis
Publishing scientific articles and participating in knowledge mobilization
