Job Title: Family Law Advocate

Pay Rate:  $35.44 per Hour

Program: Family Law Program

Reports to: Executive Director of QTS

Hours of Work: 35 hrs/week – Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm

Quesnel Tillicum Society seeks a full-time (35 hours/week) Family Law Advocate who will provide direct services to clients in the Quesnel Community on family law-related matters under the supervision of a lawyer. 

As primary responsibilities, the Family Law Advocate will:

  • Assess clients’ eligibility for the Family Law Advocacy program.
  • Conduct client interviews to help identify a client’s legal and non-legal needs, prioritize urgent needs, and assist clients in action planning and navigating personal and systemic barriers.
  • Provide timely and appropriate internal & external referrals to legal and non-legal resources where possible.
  • Help eligible clients with their legal aid applications and navigate other legal aid issues.
  • Provide clients with legal information about their family law issues.
  • In cases of violence, safety-planning, risk-assessment, and crisis intervention were needed, and clients were referred to appropriate resources, such as transition houses, trauma counseling, victim services, police, etc.
  • Meet with and communicate regularly with the supervising lawyer to consult on client files, obtain instructions and directions concerning client files, and obtain review and approval of proposed action and completed materials.
  • Assist clients in obtaining access to summary legal advice appointments through available resources for additional support as needed.
  • Help clients clarify and organize the facts about their case by drafting a synopsis of their matters that outlines the clients’ legal issues, legal questions, and desired outcomes, and which clients can take to meetings with lawyers and other organizations or legal professionals.
  • Provide tips for legal research and self-advocacy.
  • Assist clients in drafting court forms and court applications.
  • Where appropriate, accompany clients to legal appointments for support and to assist with communication.
  • Where appropriate, accompany clients to court to assist with orientation and help connect them with relevant services such as duty counsel, as well as to provide emotional/moral support.
  • Maintain and manage accurate and timely client files and records.
  • Help clients understand their court
  • If appropriate, facilitate Public Legal Education (PLE) workshops to inform the public on key family law topics.

  • A passion for justice and desire to help individuals facing difficult life circumstances without judgment.
  • Ability to communicate compassionately with people in crisis.
  • Strict adherence to ethical standards and maintaining confidentiality.
  • An inquisitive mind – a strong desire to learn and explore new skills and processes, ask questions to get at the details, and seek out knowledge by asking for help/direction/assistance without delay.
  • Excellent note-taking and organization skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
  • An ability to work independently and under the direct supervision of a lawyer.
  • Excellent word processing skills and an openness and willingness to learn new software.
  • An interest in a job that requires daily learning and an ability and flexibility to apply existing skills and knowledge to new sets of facts.
  • Strong ability to speak, read, and write in English.
  • A diploma or higher in a social services-related field, such as social work, law, counselling, or other relevant education.
  • Previous experience in conflict resolution, crisis intervention, case management, and advocacy support work in public health, social services, or legal services.
  • A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the above.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret legislation and policies, with knowledge of government processes and systems, is an asset.

Salary is dependent upon experience and qualifications. The successful applicant is eligible for a benefits package with QTS. This position is subject to funding from the Law Foundation of BC.
