Job Description

Description:

Nature of Assignment :

The Reading and Writing Excellence (RWE) program addresses students’ academic language development, critical thinking, academic reading and writing needs through online support as well as bi-weekly appointments. Since the RWE program addresses language- and culture-related needs of students transitioning to university-level writing, students prioritized for the RWE program are English Language Learners, Gen 1.5 students, and students not familiar with Academic Writing. Students who seek higher levels of academic writing skills also apply to participate in this program. Participation in the RWE program is voluntary, yet students find great value in the personalized feedback and support they receive from their RWE writing instructor, which boosts their confidence and enables them to accelerate their development of critical thinking and academic writing competence.

Please note that application requirements for each posting is listed under the "Duties" section.

Relevant Criterion

Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Description of Duties:

The chief duty of the Writing Instructor for the RWE program is to support students wishing to expand their active vocabulary; increase their academic language competence and confidence; and develop critical reading, thinking and writing skills over a sustained period. The instructor’s responses model a rich spectrum of language usage and good academic integrity practices.

The writing instructor will hold 30-minute meetings every two weeks (or weekly, where needed in individual cases) and provide personalized feedback and guidance to student posts on Quercus. Instructors are responsible for encouraging their students to keep up with the daily reading and writing routine of the program and nurturing students’ academic writing ability. Instructors will guide students in the development of academic vocabulary and academic writing style using relevant academic resources. RWE Writing Instructors may also be required to develop pedagogical materials related to critical reading, academic writing, and language development; participate in compensated professional development relevant to inter-cultural exchange; and provide feedback to the program coordinator via semi-regular meetings. Where there is a greater need to support students’ reading and writing development in the context of their courses, the RWE writing instructor’s time may be reallocated to serve this purpose. Should student uptake of the program be lower than expected, the RWE instructor may be assigned to provide regular Writing Support appointments. Where necessary, the RWE Writing Instructor will receive training and assigned to conduct a limited number of ELD consultations or drop-in sessions.

For Fall 2025 and Winter 2026, the one-on-one meeting with students are expected to be physically in person on campus, unless students inform the RWE administrator that they need their appointments online. In between the in-person appointments, writing instruction will be conducted online. When circumstances make remote one-on-one meetings necessary, instructors should have access to a stable, high-speed internet line, a computer with a working webcam and microphone and a quiet workspace.

Appointment Dates: Fall Term Only (September 2 to December 23, 2025) or Fall/Winter Terms (September 2, 2025 to April 30, 2026)
