Essential Fundamentals of Clinical Programming
This course is designed to provide a foundation of clinical knowledge and build real-world experience through practical examples of SAS programming.
This 10-week introductory course walks the aspiring programmer through high-level concepts related to clinical programming in the life sciences industry. The drug development process will be revealed through a programmer’s perspective to gain a basic understanding of what must be accomplished along the way. Programming exercises will educate the student to the vast amount of data that must be transformed and analyzed to prove the safety and efficacy of clinical trials.
Successful completion of this course will provide valuable insight from the material presented and practical experience from the exercises to provide a fundamental knowledge for the new clinical programmer, and a thoughtful review for the experienced programmer.
Who Should Take This Course
This program is for novice level SAS programmers with little to no industry experience. Upon successful completion of this course, the SAS programmer will have gained a fundamental level of expertise to draw upon when engaged in real-world projects.
After completion, students will have a basic understanding of trial design, programming processes, programming documents, data standards, data flow, regulatory requirements, and data analysis.
At the end of the course students should grasp and appreciate the extent of contributions SAS programmers make in clinical trial management.
Duration and Prerequisites
A total of 10 weeks is needed for completing the program.
Education and/or Experience
Student will possess a baccalaureate degree and have a basic understanding of SAS programming.
System Requirements
Personal computer with Windows® 7 or later; or Mac OS 10.8 or later; and 2 GB available storage for files.
Assessments
Knowledge checks will be performed through a quiz in every session. Evaluation of written reports will be performed through multiple assignments/exercises and will conclude with a final examination. A minimum of 75% is required to pass the final examination.

Meet Our Instructors
Chris Hurley has worked in the industry since 1990, starting as a contract SAS programmer in the Clinical Data Management department at Warner Lambert/Parke-Davis, which later was acquired by Pfizer. At Pfizer, Chris moved to Clinical Reporting Systems where he worked on statistical programming and data standards projects.
